About the International Symposium on VolunteeringThe year 2001, proclaimed International Year of Volunteers (IYV 2001) by the United Nations, provides a timely opportunity to highlight the achievements of millions of volunteers worldwide. The Year is also a platform for people to engage in volunteer activity. Over 100 national committees have been set up all over the world to implement the four objectives of the year: recognition, facilitation, networking and promotion of volunteering. The International Symposium on Volunteering (ISV) enabled those involved in volunteerism to evaluate experiences and lessons learned throughout the IYV 2001. Delegates from around the globe
presented their volunteer projects. These
presentations will form the basis for a Symposium Report, which will be
published (book/CD-ROM), and serve as an important contribution to the
report to be presented to the United Nations General Assembly in 2002
on the IYV 2001. Furthermore, the Symposium
allowed all parties involved to prepare and coordinate future volunteer
action.
